MBCT Explained:
Both mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) address stress, anxiety and low mood. Jon-Kabat-Zinn founded MBSR in 1979 and MBCT was developed from this and was first taught in 2000. Both are based on the same approach of developing skills, which allow us to relate more skilfully to life’s ups and downs, which no one escapes, rather than avoiding or denying them, which is a more usual habit.
The most scientifically studied, tested and proven mindfulness training programme to reduce stress, this course is evidence based and is backed by research in providing the tools of using mindfulness teachings, which give you effective new ways of handling stress, chronic pain and health conditions. Practising mindfulness has so many benefits. Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now and to be fully present. If you are mentally somewhere else, you are missing real life.

What to expect
A mindful and kind approach to quietening your mind. The first step is to recognise thoughts as simply what they are – thoughts not truths. Mindfulness can free you to do that.
Increasingly people are turning to mindfulness to enable them to cope with the stress of the modern world. On this six week course, you will learn how to practice mindfulness as well as how to apply it to the daily life that you are actually living.
MBCT
MBCT is based on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Programme (MBSR) developed by Jon-Kabat-Zinn. MBCT combines mindfulness techniques with cognitive therapy. The main difference is that MBCT focuses more specifically on symptoms of unhelpful or negative thinking patterns that can cause low mood.
MBCT is normally conducted within a group setting with weekly sessions led by your mindfulness coach or it can be done on a 1:1 basis via zoom online. In the six week meetings, you will learn meditation techniques and discover a better relationship between the way you think and how you feel. There is homework involved, which includes practicing mindful meditation daily and to bring present moment awareness into your everyday routine. Your weekly meetings are 1-2 hours per week on Sundays at The Northbrook Clinic. By developing a daily meditation practice, we can use the technique whenever we start to feel overwhelmed with negative thinking, life stressors and life challenges when sadness occurs. This can trigger a relapse of depression. You will learn about the tools that will help replace negative thinking with compassion, calmness and positive action.
The main goal is to help people identify negative thinking patterns that lead to low mood, to learn mindfulness techniques, to become more aware of thoughts and feelings and break free from the cycle of negative thinking.
